Origianlly: "A god begging and with the hammer giving". Literally, this proverb translates as "God helps those who help themselves." It is used to imply the importance of one's own initiative. Although it may give the impression that this expression comes from the Bible, it actually comes from Ancient Greece. In the Mediterranean part, we can find several versions first in some fables by Aesop, in different Greek tragedies and by Ovid. However, we also find this expression in the bhagavad-gītā of India.
This saying served to warn people of the risks of falling into laziness or indolence, leaving everything in the hands of a superior divinity. Religious fervor probably made people believe that simply entrusting themselves to a God would achieve their goals without having to lift a finger. It is not surprising that we find it in religions other than antiquity and that later others copied it later, such as Christianity or Islam.
